Image File Preparation

This indispensable and very important step is where we perfect your image for printing.  Image File Preparation involves making color and tonal adjustments to attain a precise match to your original. We run as many proofs as needed to match your original.  Before we notify you of your proof being ready for review we make sure our staff are satisfied we have attained the best match and print possible.

The other steps included in this process include generous cleanup, retouching, color correction, image archiving, custom image editing, and digital restoration if needed.

Proofing – Image file preparation from original artwork involves exacting color and tonal corrections in image editing software for each substrate. We spare no effort during this process to produce a finished print of the very best quality that is virtually indistinguishable to the original.

Each printer, substrate, and ink combination requires a unique set of adjustments to produce the best print possible.  Switching between papers on the same printer can require adjustments to ensure the exact match to your original artwork.  This is usually due to the slightly different white points of each paper.  Switching between paper and canvas always requires adjustment due to to the different natures of these surfaces. In addition, the different varnish finishes used on the canvas prints will cause a shift in color density and saturation.

We run as many proofs necessary to attain the closest match possible to your original artwork.  Once we have matched your original to our best ability we will show you a proof. If you see an adjustment you would like to request, we will make the changes and run you another proof until you are completely satisfied.

Cleanup/Retouch/Editing – There is always a level of cleanup for all art or artifacts. Once we light your work with our 1,800 watts of light even the smallest hair or piece of dust that your eye generally does not see will illuminate. We also need to either separate your original from the background or crop and clean up the edges digitally so you have a flawless image ready for printing.  Some custom image editing or digital retouching is also included in this step.  If you want something removed or changed in your original this is included. You may also want to consider whether or not you will leave your signature in the piece or have us digitally remove it so you can sign your prints fresh.

Image Archiving – This is a service for which other companies will charge you extra.  Image archiving is included when working with Old Town Editions.  We pride ourselves in having our own method of keeping editions true.  We keep a proof print on file and document the printer, paper, and ink combinations to ensure that the last print of your edition is exactly the same as your first print. This method gives you the ability to order prints as you need them, rather than ordering your entire edition at once. We also maintain our printers longer than a normal shop and keep them precisely calibrated. Unless you find a shop like ours that specializes in art reproductions, you will have varying color from order to order. We guarantee that your prints will look exactly the same from order to order, and from year to year.

The file prep cost is $200 each. This is a one-time fee. Once this step is finished and you have approved the final proof, your file will be archived and you will not have to pay this again for that image, you will only pay for printing. Quantity discounts are available when paired with a 20+ sheet order or 15,000 sq/inches of canvas printing.
